Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN)

CAPS Rating:
**

The Company operates retail websites and offers programs that enable third parties to sell products on its websites. It also operates other websites that enable search and navigation and a movie database.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

If pure business excellence was the sole criteria I were using, Amazon would be one of my "Monsters of Greatness" stocks that I'd want to hold for the next 25 years. Shoulda been in years and years ago. Others in my collection - note I'm media, food and TMF newsletter heavy - could include:

Bezos the CEO just unloaded $135M of his shares near Feb 15. He knows something others will discover. He didn't sell at all during this last years huge price buildup. This stock is overpriced with likely reduced future earnings. I shorted this one once before and had to concede to the bulls. ...More

So long as they have competitive prices and back up the vendors selling through their site, I think they'll just grow larger and become a more valuable resource for shoppers.

Headed for 2006 low under 30. Consumer Crunch + Credit Crunch = AMZN pain.

Amazon is stronger than I expected. It's pulled back recently with the rest of the market, but they've killed earnings lately. They are a strong business and will only get stronger in a downturn because of the ridiculously cheap prices they offer and the Super Saver Shipping they offer that puts them a step ahead of other retailers for most working families. People are still yet discovering that some of the things they pay a lot for in a brick-and-mortar store can be gotten at half the price they paid at Amazon. During a Christmas season with a weak economy, shoppers that prefer brick-and-mortar shopping may go to Wal-Mart, but the online shoppers will look to Amazon first.
