The toy industry holds up comparatively well during difficult times of the business cycle compared to other consumer categories, and HAS has had solid earnings thus far in 2009.

More store closings and tight inventory management at toy retailers pose some threat to Hasbro, but the economy is turning up.

Personal income decreased $0.1 billion, or less than 0.1 percent, and disposable personal income
(DPI) decreased $0.2 billion, or less than 0.1 percent, in September 2009, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis. This means fewer dollars to spend on toys and consumer staples, but the effect of a decrease in DPI is more felt with consumer staples than with toys as consumer can substitue for cheaper and store labels when it comes to toothpase, shaving gels, etc, but with toys, kids have strict prefernces.
