Valhi, Inc. (VHI)

CAPS Rating:
*

The Company has operations through its majority-owned subsidiaries or less than majority-owned affiliates in the chemicals, component products, waste management and titanium metals industries.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

The bears have no clue as to why VHI has been up.

VHI had negative earnings for 2007, 2008 and probably will also for 2009. Revenues have been a flat $1.5B during these first two years and 2009 should come in at about $1.2B. They also carry about $1B in debt. VHI has trailed the S&P 500 in terms of price performance, but VHI's recent rise has brought it close to even with the S&P. I project that VHI will revert to its norm and underperform against the S&P 500 for 2010.

Valhi, Inc. is a holding company and operates through its wholly owned and majority-owned subsidiaries, including NL Industries, Inc., Kronos Worldwide, Inc., CompX International Inc. and Waste Control Specialists LLC (WCS). The Company operates in three segments: chemicals, component products and waste management. Its chemicals segment is operated through its majority ownership of Kronos. It operates in the component products industry through its majority ownership of CompX. It operates its waste management segment through WCS, the Company’s wholly owned subsidiary, which owns and operates a West Texas facility for the processing, treatment, storage and disposal of hazardous, toxic and certain types of low-level radioactive waste.

Well above its recent price range and falling fast after hours. Will try to get in before it falls too much.

Hmm, Stock is up nearly 40% since reporting another money losing quarter on 11/09 due in part due to declining revenuesand increasing defined benefit pension costs, Has low ($1) tangible book value which is mostly property offset by a very high level of debt debt.

Positives include solid dividend and modest insider buying by the chairman but as I see it, not only is the viablitiy of dividend is in question but the survival of the Chairman (and even the Company) could be play.

Disclosure: I am short VHI in real life

too expensive, huge Enterprise Value/EBITDA ratio, very poor ROE (-7.58%), very low operating margin (-0.08%) and a huge hole of debts

In other words, there is a No. 1 stock in CAPS and a worst-ranked stock in CAPS. When you arrive at the top-ranked stock, clicking "Beat this Stock!" will cause the page to refresh.

That is, until there is a new No. 1 stock!
