THOMPSON CREEK METALS (TC)

CAPS Rating:
*****

Thompson Creek Metals mines, mills, processes, and markets molybdenum products in Canada and the United States.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Can't understand how this stock can be trading near $5

with Molly prices under $8 and falling. My bet is that recovery in building isfurther away than the market anticipates

TC is in a strong financial position that allows it to weather the current dynamic economic situation. It should rebound strongly once the economy stabilizes and there is greater clarity in forecasted growth.

My # 3 pick for 2010. I've always liked commodities. Goal: $ 15.00+ a share.

There's some real downside risk here, particularly after a 200+% runup. Moly prices look down from the '07 peak, but that peak may have been the anomaly, and the fall back down a bit more sensible (look at the 15Y chart for moly).

Additionally, capex for next year is estimated to be $300M, which is almost 2.50/share. It may be a good long-term investment but it may also have some impact on the stock price into 2010.

With a 50% increase in earnings power from 2009 to 2010, plus the exspansion of India, China, Brazil and other emerging markets it could be raised even more. Other contries are rebounding better than the U.S., Bucyrus beat there quarter by .25 and raised thier 2010 guidence on the fact the big three are increasing thier capex 80% or more in 2010. So it stands to reason that Thompson Creek Metals will not be far behind.
