JAKARTA, Dec 14 (Reuters) - Indonesia's government has approved plans to develop the Wortel gas field, operated by Australian oil and gas producer Santos Ltd (STO.AX), the deputy head of the country's energy watchdog, BPMIGAS, said on Monday.
Another BPMIGAS official said that the Wortel field, in Sampang block, offshore of East Java, is estimated to have recoverable reserves of about 150 billion cubic feet of gas and that Santos was expected to start gas production from the Wortel field in 2011.
SYDNEY (DOW JONES)--Santos Ltd. (STO.AU) said Thursday it expects its capital expenditure to nearly double in 2010, as it pushes ahead with several major gas projects to capitalize on booming Asian demand for cleaner fuels.
Santos said it expects to produce between 51 million and 54 million barrels of oil equivalent in 2010, a lower range than its forecast 53 million and 56 million barrels of oil equivalent for the current year.
(As conventional oil production falls, they are focusing on new LNG production in Papua New Guinea and Malaysia. A MUCH cheaper play on Papua New Guinea LNG than InterOil (IOC)).
"The Carnarvon Basin is already one of Australia's most productive areas, where hundreds of offshore wells have already been drilled. Santos Ltd. (OTC:STOSY), an Australian listed company, has interests in ten producing fields here already."
