Starbucks Corp (SBUX)

I think this business will continue to do well, even in this depressed economy. Simply by my own observation, I have noticed enormous amounts of store traffic in my neck of the woods, which includes NYC. Just about every time I enter a Starbucks, it is busy, and today was no exception. I am one who LOVES to read, and sometimes I become tired of the library atmosphere. Following the advice of a friend, I tried a Starbucks as a way to break up some of the monotony. To my surprise, I enjoyed it, seeing the ambience as conducive to intellectual as well as social activities. And while the coffee may be a bit pricey, when it comes to fun, inexpensive things to do in a poor economy, ironically, Starbucks is one solid option. I frequently go there with my girlfriend to read and socialize over a cup of coffee or hot chocolate. Starbucks is always a place for us to go when somewhat bored or wanting to get together quickly before work or school. And out of all places we venture, it is by far the least expensive. The other night I saw two guys who own Harley's patronizing a Starbucks; and, now today, I even noticed some guys playing chess while enjoying their coffee and desserts. This business model obviously appeals to a very broad demographic, even though their products are priced as though its target market is almost exclusively the upper class. So, essentially, I believe their success lies not within what they sell per say, but rather the environment they provide within their stores, which currently appears to be unrivaled.
