Everest Re Group, Ltd. (RE)

CAPS Rating:
**

The Company through its operating subsidiaries, is the underwriting of reinsurance and insurance in the U.S., Bermuda and international markets.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Hurricanes haven't destroyed the reinsurance business yet. Here's hoping they don't have any toxic waste on the balance sheet and we can get a few CAPS points from them.

Found this company under the insurance tag. Sell all property insurance and casualty stocks, or see your portfolio bcome a casualty! Warren Buffett is negative on the sector and that's good enough for me. Financial sector s--t has to work iits way through the whole goose.

Combined ratio below 90% for previous quarter and six month periods. Relatively quiet hurricane season so far. Insurance is cyclical and coming out of a rough market with significant competition. Once the johnny-come-lately's are thinned due to mis-pricing risk the sector will pick up. Someone posted Buffett is bearish on the sector- Buffett does not issue market calls. And BRK's primary provider of cash for investing is and has been float from insurers for decades. See also FFH and MKL.

There is less momentum, less volume, and less buying going on. We are in the last part of this rally.

The 1929-1930 equity rally (coming out of The Great Depression) lasted 147 days and the market was up 46%. It has been the same amount of time since the March, 2009 low and we are up about the same percentage. It’s déjà vu (paramnesia), so prepare for a drop of about the same percentage (85%).
