Paychex, Inc. (PAYX)

CAPS Rating:
****

The Company is a provider of payroll, human resource, and employee benefits outsourcing solutions for small- to medium-sized businesses.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

I own a small business and use PAYX as a provider. They are doing all the right things during this recession, investing in their current customer base, going the extra mile to retain existing business, expanding offerings and asking for referrals to others who would benefit. I'll admit I've not lo...More

This Company is edging up toward its 52 week high and
could probably underperform. However, there is a definite
trend toward outsourcing human resources in the business world. Small business will lead the way out of the present recession and should create an excellent climate for Paychex. The div...More

Great, predictable business that isn't going anywhere. If you assume the next decade is more or less like the last one--and there is no reason to think it wouldn't be--a dcf analysis will give you a fair price in the 70s. Next year could be a little rocky if the recovery is sluggish, but if PAYX goes down, I'll just be dollar cost averaging into a very long position.

As companies cut back and out-source, this may become the payroll standard contractor with Fool Rulebreaker recommendation in Jan. 2009.

DG recc: good dividend, stable cash flow despite downturn - just now started to rise. ADP also good.

High cost to switch. Back office is easiest for most industries to cut as it generates zero income. Excellent dividend.
