Penske Automotive Group, Inc. (PAG)

CAPS Rating:
**

The Company is engaged in the sale of new and used motor vehicles and related products and services, including vehicle service, parts, collision repair, finance and lease contracts, third-party insurance products and other aftermarket products.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Penske will build a car business using the PC paradigm, much like Dell makes PC's. Selecting assemblers and components from a wide variety of vendors. Engines, transmissions, electronics, interiors will be selected and the car will be assembled by specialist like Samsung/Renault, Valmet, Karmann e...More

Why so few bears? Very high debt load, margins were nonexistent even in good years, and capital allocation has been astonishingly bad. Mr. Penske's 40% stake gives me little comfort.

Lost credibility and prestige over the past year as a result of many poor decisions including it's failed bid to buy Saturn.

Two of the three Detroit auto makers are dead and the third, Ford, is in the ICU. That era is over and it is time to move on.

Roger Penske is an innovator comparable to Steve Jobs.

Brand mix, Management, versitility and reputation will keep customers coming back to them as other dealers and brands drop out.

Leadersship owns a lot of stock (read: 2 million shares). Leadership not accustomed to losing - (see Forbes 400, Auto Racing, Etc.). Right brands, current price victim of worries about the sector. A lot of debt, yes, but they're the sector leader. Not the biggest, but definitely the smartest.

That is, until there is a new No. 1 stock!
