CAPS Rating:
*

The Company is an online closeout retailer offering discount brand name merchandise, including bed-and-bath goods, home decor, kitchenware, watches, jewelry, electronics and computers, sporting goods, apparel and designer accessories.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Not sure why the price popped on 6/17, but I am happy to short this at the open for the same reasons other people see. The company never makes money and it has gradually sunk to a negative book value. Not much here to justify $234 million in market cap.

Has anyone here ever bought anything on Overstock?? I've browsed there many times, and NEVER found something I wanted. I mean...there's a reason why these items didn't sell elsewhere. They're overpriced specialty junk, for the most part, and even at a discount, they're still overpriced junk. Revenue of 800M isn't bad, but they're losing money. Now we've got UPS raising rates and Obama raising taxes. We've got consumers with less expendable income and retailers with more competitve pricing.

The short ratio is 19.9 or a whopping 25% of float, which means that IF I'm wrong...and they have a great holiday season, and their stock goes up, as shorts cover their positions this stock is gonna fly. But I just really have trouble believing that they will turn a profit. And if they had to liquidate their inventory, it'd be worth far less than they paid on it, which means their asset valuation ratio isn't realistic. It's only worth what they're claiming, if they can sucker consumers into paying it...and consumers are gonna be hard to sucker this year. This company is in trouble.

I've had a red thumb on this for quite some time and haven't tracked it closely for a while. However, I just saw this: http://www.businessinsider.com/henry-blodget-overstock-fires-auditor-elects-to-go-it-alone-2009-11

My goodness. The threats of the competitive landscape are bad enough, but that kind of wackiness... good luck to those who are holding on to this one, is the feeling I get right now.

Shady accounting, virtually no real earnings, negative equity, and a vastly inflated stock price based on the theory that it should be valued with the same premiums as Amazon (AMZN) --- which is probably overvalued itself at this point. Regardless, Amazon is a highly successful internet retailer, whereas, Overstock.com ... not so much.

Both Gary Weiss and Sam Antar have chronicled Overstock's accounting issues in some detail. Link to Gary Weiss article below about SEC finally enforcing regulation G:

http://seekingalpha.com/article/173193-eureka-the-sec-enforced-regulation-g

The SEC has become more aggressive and appears to be looking into OSTK right now, too. Who knows what will come of this, but I think this is a rotten company one way or another.
