News Corp (NWS)

CAPS Rating:
***

An entertainment company with operations in eight industry segments, including Filmed Entertainment, Television, Cable Network Programming, Direct Broadcast Satellite Television, Magazines and Inserts, Newspapers, Book Publishing and Other.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

You cannot "charge" for these "websites," Rupert. You have to "monetize" them in different ways.

Shame about the WSJ. Time was, you could go to it as the world's number 1 source for financial news. Now it's gone to the dogs, and the #1 source for financial news is Cramer.

I'm bearish on all big media, especially the ones that alienate those they disagree with.

Higher than expected revenues from the blockbuster film "Avatar" and the film studio in general should carry this stock higher in the early half of 2010. Increased exposure to foreign cable markets has been beneficial to NWS, especially with its SkyItalia network. The company is also in serious negotiations with Time Warner, one of its biggest customers. Time Warner is threatening to pull its content off the air in January, but let's face it, Time Warner needs Fox and all that it carries with it, so they'll most likely concede to the (rather hefty) rate increases. And let't not forget who's captaining this ship: Rupert Murdoch.

Just that debt as a % is up even as noises of complaint about this and that competitor are heard from execs of this company. News Co. is involved in books & magazines, and that is a major turn off in this century.

They failed to re-name the film studio "21st Century Fox" as well. Backward looking. Also Roger Ailes has a dodgy past...strange that the hiring branch failed to pick that up...

As day to day trading continues, this may go up to 17-18 on pressures and currencies, but must slump lazily into the future, as costs spiral out of control and fossilized management tries "stunt" after "stunt" - could be an amusing "reality show" if they film themselves.
