Manulife Financial Corp (USA ) (MFC)

CAPS Rating:
****

A life insurance company incorporated under the ICA. MFC was incorporated under the ICA on April 26, 1999 for the purpose of becoming the holding company of Manufacturers Life following its demutualization.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Even though Buffett is cautious on insurance, I like the growth opportunities for this company and the price looks right.

Still recovering from hedging practices from Manulife One package product. Has had to dilute stock by raising bond and equity offering to shore up capital to meet requirements. Dilution has been priced fully in stock. May be stagnant over short term but with net income (profit) expect to double next year this poses well for a stock carrying P/E in low 9 territory making this a very attractive play against global financial plays.

Quality, beaten down insurer advances with the S&P but at a greater percentage multiple. Unlike other insurers, it sacrificed 50% of dividend to rebuild capital rather than diluting the equity with new shares.

I owned the old John Hancock which Manlife bought. Since
than the stock has split. It has paid div. every quarter.
I like this stock. It has been good to me. Rudmary

At the end of 2008, MFC has an embedded value(EV) of 28.68 Canadian dollar.

My entry price of $7.78 = 0.34 EV

At or before 2007, MFC used to trade at a valuation of 2x EV.

I bought a diamond for the price of a glass bead.
