JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM)

CAPS Rating:
**

A financial holding Company whose activities are organized into six business segments: Investment Bank, Retail Financial Services, Card Services, Commercial Banking, Treasury & Securities Services and Asset Management.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other players to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Though towards the high end of its 52 week range, Chase is becoming a bigger and bigger fish in a shrinking pool. Card Services keep expanding (to the detriment of many) and the other segments of the business aren't just sittin' around chillin'.

Don't let the smooth taste fool you.

The Bear deal is not as wonderful as it seems. Yes, they get a $1B building and some prime brokerage business for free.

But Bear Stern was a huge underwriter of credit default swaps (CDS). JP Morgan now takes over that exposure. That is like finding a treasur...More

Financials still not out of the woods. Will be a few weeks before Bear Stearns is settled and with the combination of Countrywide still looking for the down side here. Took the chance with BAC last week and it was too early. Learned my lesson.

subprime was just the beginning.

Look at financials to wow everyone in a bad way coming into earnings here.

Expect more write-offs that they can no longer hide. This sector has been beaten down and rightfully so. Many banks in this category are carrying a P/E ratio of ~10. I'm looking to go short on these until a P/E in the mid-single digits.

All these banks are looking at huge exposure to more at-risk loans. Don't let people fool you into believing this drop is done.

In my personal portfolio, I've been riding proshares SKF double short ETF for some big gains recently.

I believe banks still have a way to go until the end of the year. May see another mini-rally like we saw in the spring but overall I believe this sector still has a way to go.

JP Morgan should downgrade itself. It has a terrible debt load, it's in a terrible sector, it has exposure to the sub-prime mess, and it posted a lousy slightly positive return on equity for the quarter. And yet, some people are attracted by the P/E ratio of 9.46 (as I write this).

This company isn't even worth it at 9.46 earnings - I wouldn't even consider buying unless it hit a ridiculous P/E of 2 or something. Sell this crap, short it, or if you want to hold it, expect a couple years before it recovers. Same for the rest of the financial sector. The bottom hasn't fallen out yet.

Biggest bank or not, it's going down along with the rest as the bears roam free. No bank is immune but some will find their price stablising when investors recognise its true value. Why was it chosen to buy Bear Stearns? Maybe because the really good banks refused to take on bad debt sweetened by immediate liquidity?

If i'd had some capital, i'll buy all those puts for all these big banks that are sending my CAPS score soaring!
