Intevac, Inc. (IVAC)

CAPS Rating:
***

A provider of disk sputtering equipment to manufacturers of magnetic media used in hard disk drives and a developer and provider of leading technology for extreme low light imaging sensors, cameras and systems.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Intevac, INC was rewarded with a 22% stock appreciation on Monay, (1/4/2010) after announcing orders for (8) of its high end 200 Lean System disk sputtering machines. For the less technical, these are needed to manufacture the platters on the disk drives in your compters. That demand for disk drives is increasing under an ever increasing load of data storage needs, is definitely supportable and good news for Intevac. After a rough recession where orders for their equipment were no doubt deferred it can be expected that new orders would come in. My issue is that Intevac is still under distress. It has never been a hugely profitable company. Margins are razor thin. Revenue, before the recession had dropped nearly 50% yoy. Cash flow is poor. Although debt is at a minimal, Intevac's current share price is now greater than it was two years ago and revenue is half. The new orders may mean sustainability for Intevac, but do not demonstrate growth. I also question whether Intevac is capable of keeping up with the ever changing technology. They face stiff competion and their capital is limited. R&D spending has been declining.

Company has 3+ quarters of backlog at a good margin. Only question is whether they can hit profitable operating scale and fund R&D at the same time while outmaneuvering much larger competitors. Company continues to innovate in a very specialized market.
