Hot Topic, Inc. (HOTT)

CAPS Rating:
**

The Company is a small mall-based specialty retailer operating the Hot Topic and Torrid store concepts.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

I missed Hot Topics at the deep sell off after their quarterly announce, but I agree with Port, MrIndependent, and Jakiliathehun that while I don't care much for retailers when pitted against the S&P in a recession, Hot Topics was beaten down too hard compared to it's peers. I'll admit it, I am not a fan of teen / young adult retail operations. Even considering putting some of my hard earned money into names such as TLB, ANF, or GPS turns my stomach. But HOTT seems to offer an exception to my retail aversion.

The company has about $2.05 per share in cash. Book value at .9, P/S .3 and P/CF at 4. They have no debt, and overall, the balance sheet seems relatively solid. I did notice, though, that although their net PPE has shrunk by ~10% in the past several quarters, inventory has not followed suit. This could indicate that they are not moving merchandise -- and it might be a sign of some short term margin pressure in the coming quarters.

The company currently focuses on two major retail lines. The Hot Topic concept focuses on mall and online sales of pop culture influenced apparel. The Torrid stores address the apparel needs of plus size teenage / young adult women. They have also more recently introduced Shockhound, which sells music and music merchandise. Even in the face of a recession, teens will continue to spend their free cash at stores such as these. And with the deep discount in stock value, this becomes a pretty attractive investment option over the next year or so.

This company has been making goods for teens for a long time, and they are certainly less trendy than ANF. Hot topic is cheap and a good place to get band t-shirts etc. I think they are a bit oversold at this stage.
