Harley-Davidson, Inc. (HOG)

CAPS Rating:
**

The Company operates in two business segments: Motorcycles and Financial Services.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

You need your car. You need somewhere to sleep. You need food. You don't need that expensive Hog sitting in the garage.

Hard to bet against such a great company. I think their recovery will lag the economy in general, though a weaker dollar could help them grow overseas.

Frankly, in the long run, sales outside of the US are the only way this company can grown in the next 20-30 years like it did since its IPO in 1986. HOG is still a status brand in many places outside the US and discretionary income is growing faster than in the US in some of those places.

I think the long-term potential for HOG is great, but over the next year, their prospects are not as good. The US market is far more saturated for high-end bikes and they are not picking up younger buyers in their core market.

Check out their balance sheet. Look at their showrooms. Talk to the employees who have been layed off. Now answer this question: "When do you expect middle aged men to start shelling out big bucks for a toy they don't need when they are worried about whether they'll have a job tomorrow (or when they'll find one)?" The answer I come up with is: "Not this year and probably not next." Now look at that balance sheet again and flip over to the income statement. Now answer this question: "Will Harley still be in business when the employment picture improves to a reasonable level?" The answer I come up with is: "sell this baby short and don't think twice." And honestly, I love motorcycles and I hope I'm wrong on this one.

People are scared right now. Everyone is downsizing and money is tight for people. Fortunately, Harley is not owned by a bowling ball maker anymore. This company will survive and thrive in years to come. The current circumstances will only cause Harley to get stronger in the long run by forcing more favorable union cooperation and cutting excess manufacturing. Harley hires some bright, common sense people to grow the company and build motorcycles. The bottom line is that Harley is the dominant motorcycle brand and this recession won't change that. Be greedy when others are fearful. After all, a few lean years are only going to cause an explosion of demand in the future.
