Harman continues to lead the market in home theater systems. The growth potential is great and looks like a good buy.

OK, this stock definitely wins the stupid award of the day.

I figured that if Goldman Sachs et al were once willing to buy the firm for $120 a share, an $8 billion valuation, it was worth a look at lower levels. I also figured that even though autos were never going to be rip roaring success for American producers that the computer automated systems for controlling much of typical dashboards would be gaining more and more market share world wide. It was a risk/reward trade. As autos recover, it should continue to improve.

Look at this from 2007:

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Two private equity firms said on Monday that they would invest $400 million in Harman International Industries Inc (HAR.N) debt as part of a deal to end their proposed buyout and avoid a long and expensive legal battle.

Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co LP KKR.UL and Goldman Sachs Group Inc's (GS.N) private equity arm last month backed out of their $8 billion agreement to buy the audio equipment maker, citing what they said were material adverse changes in its business.

The takeover agreement had a $225 million break-up fee, meaning Harman could pursue various measures to collect the money. Founder and Executive Chairman Sidney Harman on Monday repeated the company's stance that it disagreed with the reasons the private equity firms gave for backing out.

But rather than engage in a long and potentially expensive legal battle, Harman and the private equity firms came to an agreement, saying there would be no litigation of the matter.

The two firms will instead buy $400 million of 1.25 percent company senior notes that can be converted, under some circumstances, into Harman stock at $104 per share.

The takeover deal had valued Harman at $120 per share.

=====================================================

I wonder just how the 1.25% converts trade, and if the buyers shorted stock against it.

OK, this stock definitely wins the stupid award of the day.

"Harman International Industries, Incorporated (Harman International) is engaged in the development, manufacture and marketing of high-fidelity audio products and electronic systems." This sentence should end with "in a recession." Can anyone say "lack of consumer discretionary spending?" Sure you can!

The company announced a loss (yes, loss) in 2Q of $.05 cents a share beating estimates of a $0.23 a share loss. And the shareholders got OH SOOOO excited so they bid the stock up 21% in a single day? Boy and I thought the market was looking for just about ANY GOOD NEWS to bid up the market, silly me. This is a firm that has not made a single cent in the past 5 quarters of operations. And its 2011 forecasted P/E is now 31. Give me a break. This company hasn't even proven it can make money in a single quarter and yet it deserves a multiple like that?

Have I mentioned the debt or book value? So they have $631MM in debt, book value of 2.5, a negative ROE and massive Capital Expenditures burning through their operating cash.

This looks so tasty I may have to buy a few puts and see what happens.
