Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Shenandoah plant recently (8-16) received first shipments of corn. Plant is operational and will be profitable soon. The 2007 U.S. corn crop is forecast at 13.054 billion bushels, 2.52 billion larger than the 2006 crop and about 145 million larger than the average pre-report expectation.

I may be catching a rising knife here, but this stock seems to have gotten ahead of itself.

I was looking at their quarterly statements and, although revenue is growing by leaps and bounds, operating profits are incredibly thin. They also do not have positive operating cash flows yet on normal operations (stripping out acquisitions), and are sitting on a pile of debt.

I am not saying I think they will go bankrupt... I just don't think they've effectively figured out how to make a good profit on their product yet. They have got to get their expenses under control, show a profit for a few quarters and spend a little time shoring up their balance sheet rather than continuing to acquire bankrupt biofuel firms. Smart growth, not growth at any cost.

I also tend to believe that burning our food source in the name of energy consumption is bad policy. Corn prices this year alone have risen in the neighborhood of 30%, which makes a multitude of products more expensive for the average consumer. My gut instinct tells me the tide will turn against Ethanol in the next few years and trend towards cheaper energy sources that don't impact America's food source, such as Natural Gas. It would not surprise me if the mandated biofuel legislation from a few years ago (2007 I think?) is watered down or completely repealed.

A lot of good feelings in the market today although not every stock deserves 10% to 20% gains. When people sober up, they may want to back away from this stock.

Green Plains Renewable Energy, Inc. (Green Plains) is organised to construct and operate dry mill, fuel-grade ethanol production facilities. The Company operates in three segments: production of ethanol and related by-products (which it collectively refer to as Ethanol Production); grain warehousing and marketing, as well as sales and related services of agronomy and petroleum products (which it collectively refer to as Agribusiness) and marketing and distribution of Company-produced and third-party ethanol and distillers grains (which it refer to as Marketing and Distribution). On April 3, 2008, the Company completed its merger with Great Lakes Cooperative (Great Lakes). On October 15, 2008, the Company completed the merger of VBV LLC and its subsidiaries. On January 2009, the Company acquired majority interest in Blendstar, LLC.

I thought that ethanol for fuel went out with the Bush administration. Now it's electric and dual fuel cars. Maybe natural gas cars will come with the next administration. The added benefit of ethanol was to the growers and crop prices. I suspect that political support for ethanol supplements will fade if this impairs domestic auto sales or causes other unforeseen problems.

Low cost ethanol to grow cars, that can use it for fuel.
