Corning is selling for just 1.5 times book value, which is far below its historical norm. For the last five years, this company has been doing wonderful and it has a host of new innovative products that could "shoot the lights out". The balance sheet is very liquid with 3 billion in cash compared to 2 billion of debt and Jim Jubak is an ardent fan of this company which is featured in his Jubak's Picks portfolio and in his recent book.

I'm back and forth about Corning but not as much so as with most technology companies. Jim Jubak says that CISCO and Corning are incubators for tomorrow's technologies and that seems like a good place to be once we reach the sunny side of this recession. As a small investor, it's difficult to make more than a few dollars from the small waves. If you're going to make any money, you've got to catch one of the big ones before the big investors crowd you out of it. If you can be there for the first Pop out of the shell (i.e. the IPO) and/or the second Pop onto the Mama ship (i.e. the acquisition) you may actually add a percentage point or two to your bottom line.

To do this, you're going to have to out think the big boys in the 6 month plus range and be patient. Large investors are all about the quarter. Especially those who work with OPM (other people's money). They've got to look productive and attentive so they're on hair triggers for quarterly numbers and daily news/rumors. If you can see through the flurry of activity to a point 6-12 months down the road and you're right, you can actually collect a few thousand dollars. Good luck to us all.

Regardless of whether people aren't going out to dinner or taking vacations. In a slow economy, one of the most inexpensive and popular pastimes we have is TV watching.

Even Joe Sixpack feels a bit squeamish about having the fellows over to watch the game on a conventional old style TV. Flat panel will eventually replace all old technology sets and the acceleration and current pricing of products using GLW is accelerating. GLW even after the run-up from its lows is still a screaming buy.
