This would be a bet that M&A activity will be increasing. After several years of restructuring and strengthening their balance sheets, US corporations will have to choose at some point between either internal growth attempts or acquisitions. With many solid companies currently trading at well less than ten times earnings and with consumers still in a deleveraging mode, it would seem that acquisitions would be the more enticing choice.
