Equus Total Return, Inc. (EQS)

CAPS Rating:
*****

The Company generates current distributions of net investment income and long term capital gains by making equity-oriented investments in small to medium sized privately owned companies.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Going with the "crowd"
5 CAPS stars... backed by 8 All Stars... maybe a little early to get in.

Sells at 63% NAV discount and has nice dividend as well... should see some improvement sooner or later. I can't find much information on it... so only going in by the discount and the 5 CAPS stars...

It's important to understand this is not just a basket of stocks selling way below value - this is a private equity fund invested largely in debt and preferred that takes 2-and-20 off the top. Moreover, all the information we have to value these securities is management's assessment of their fair value. A large discount to NAV is probably warranted, but probably not a 70% discount.
