Chevron Corp (CVX)

CAPS Rating:
****

Provides administrative, financial, management and technology support to U.S. and foreign subsidiaries that engage in integrated petroleum operations, chemicals operations, mining operations, power generation and energy services.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Big oil, it's over. The governments where you are getting your oil want more of the money. Profits are going to go down. How can a few greedy rich men compete when nation pull out this-means-war-card.

Energy shares are largely lower ahead of the opening bell Friday as worries about weaker-than-expected global growth persist. Analysts fret that growing inventories will lead to a further decline in petroleum prices which in turn will hurt corporate profits.

This company may or may not outperform the S&P in the short term. I could care less. Here are the facts of why I'm buying it. This company is very strong financially. I doubts whether Chevron will have any difficulty maintaining both its dividend AND its dividend growth rate. People say it's rallied a lot and could fall. I SURE HOPE SO, because if it does I'll buy as much more as I can while its down and do the same every time it goes down. With an average dividend growth rate of at least 10%, the rule of 72 tells us that this dividend will double about every 7 years. That means in about 14 years this dividend can reasonably be expected to about quadruple. So I expect each share I buy while it's yielding around 3.6% to give me a yield on cost of something more than 14% in about 14 years. With this in mind I could care less what it does next month or next year, as long as it maintains its dividend growth rate. This and other carefully chosen dividend growth stocks will generate significant dividend income in the long term regardless of what they do in the short term.

Considering the pace at which we as a nation are making the switch to alternative energy sources and the slow reaction time the avg. consumer has when it comes to the increasing gas prices, I think CVX will out perform in the short to mid range timeframe.
