Coinstar, Inc. (CSTR)

CAPS Rating:
***

A multi-national company offering a range of solutions for retailers' storefronts consisting of self-service coin counting; entertainment services such as skill-crane machines, bulk vending machines and kiddie rides and e-payment services.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Big surge from acquisition. Little profit. Maybe more someday, but must unload many crane machines, must integrate many acquisitions, must please many stakeholders (Redbox co-owner, lender on secured revolver, activist shareholders). Competition is growing in Redbox space. This is a lot to ask where...More

1) Redbox locations are increasing monthly.
2) If they can strike a deal with some of the other big movie studios to get their DVD's at below retail, profits will increase.
3) Blockbuster is old news.
4) Netflix will take away some business as they increase their streaming content, but there is certainly a market for non-subscription movie rentals...and you can get them right-away while your shopping for groceries rather than waiting a couple days for a DVD to come in the mail.
5) An enormous number of people are not tech savvy enough, or are too scared/stubborn to try streaming.

Netflix and Redbox can coexist in harmony.

ability to raise fee

ability to rent games

$1 rentals in bad times, no better entertainment value out there

redbox is the defacto kioks rental logo. brand name being the product is not easily be replaced, such as fedex, kleenex, coke

not cheap but will likely run up a bit more with a few quarters of strong kiosk count growth

After the expected Amazon-Netflix deal, Coinstar (Redbox) looks like an attractive acquisition for any firm looking to have a piece of the changing structure of media. That said, eventually we are all going to get our flix via the web, so I do not think that CSTR is an extremely long-term play.

Redbox was a great offering in the 2008-2010 timeframe. Not confident Coinstar can produce another period winner, as Redbox profits may day the way of the DVD download
