CryoLife, Inc. (CRY)

CAPS Rating:
*****

The Company develops and commercializes biomaterials, implantable medical devices, and preserves and distributes human tissues for cardiovascular and vascular transplant applications.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Cryolife is an interesting pick for me. Most pharmaceutical/bio type companies with products in development are playing roulette with the quirky FDA, buring through cash, and hoping for either a win, a buyout, or both. CryoLife differs in that they have been around for decades, cash positive. A year...More

I was turned on to this by another fool. When I went to look I saw a solid stock that is recession proof but what really made me look hard is their R&D projects. If they can get thier BioGlue to work for herniated discs this could be off and running. Also they have goverment funding to research BioFoam to help stop wounded soldiers in the field. Speculative on the upside and solid on the earnings side so as to not lose if the new projects don't come to fruition. Worth the risk and am buying some in my personal account.

Bio companies have become a recent interest because of the baby boomers aging and growing need for medical services during the next 20 years. Overall, the products offered by this company seem to be just the thing needed for now and the future. While I do have some concern of future legislation that can effect this company's profit line, I feel comfortable with it's future growth. Price had been beaten down and sales do seem off and on, but I think future developments and FDA approvals will be more forthcoming. Long haul and hold will be the key factor for this stock.

CryoLife's primary product is involved in the treatment of heart disease, the number one killer of men and women. In fact, one of every four deaths is due to the disease, so I like their prospects in that regard. They exhibit solid growth in revenue and net income while trading a very modest P/E ratio of about 6.5
