Chesapeake Energy Corp (CHK)

CAPS Rating:
*****

An oil and natural gas exploration and production company engaged in the acquisition, exploration and development of properties for the production of crude oil and natural gas from underground reservoirs and the marketing of natural gas and oil.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Why I like Chesapeake Energy:
1) Price increases. For natural gas prices to remain as low as they have been, producers would have to continue to pump out gas at costs that exceed the price it can be sold at, not counting hedges already in place.
2) Write ups. Last quarter's write downs on the va...More

One of the dumbest CEO + boards in the world. Stock may go up for a while, but if he stays it will eventually crash and burn.

Oil and natural gas prices are down. With increased demand, the price is sure to rise at an accelerated pace.

Energy sector is down overall. Chesapeake has good fundamentals. Expect this to go down in the shortterm, but a bump up in the fall and then a cold winter depleting stored up NG, we could see an easy double, perhaps even a triple in 8 months.

This industry is screaming sector snap, I like this play with the Obama admin.

Yeah, yeah, there's a lot of NG holding the price down; demand is down; no one is making money off of production; price targets are being cut....
But:
1) Everyone who can, will convert this fall to NG for their home.
2) NG Vehicle technology is mature and in use (Many fleets are using clean NG vehicles).
3) Battery only vehicles are not there yet, no matter what GM ( or whatever it's called now) says about the "Volt".
4) NG production is being cut.
5) NG is a great fuel for electricity.
And oh, yeah,
6) there's an OCEAN of CLEAN DOMESTIC NG, at least a hundred year supply at current usage, and we don't have to shave off mountaintops to get it. It's green(er).
7) The profits stay here, and no geopolitical bs. (That's what everyone wants, right?)
8) (or 7a if you like) We own it, it's a strategic asset.
9) The government will see NG as a good transitional fuel, and back the expansion of it's use.
This company has its' hands in all of the major shale plays, and is (my opinion) cheap right now. Could go lower, but buy and wait, big things will be coming.
