Looks like it has support at this level, but I'm bearish on fuel cells as a technology. It needs about 5 years to become competitive, and I'm not sure Ballard can last that long.

Ballard Power is the grandfather of the modern fuel cell industry. It spawned a number of competitors, sometimes referred to as "Baby Ballards" such as "plug power" however it is Ballard that owns over 200 of the original patents for pem fuel cells.

Besides having helped produce the prototypes for fuel cell buses which now run in cities like Chicago, LA and Vancouver, Ballard is now focused on more miche markets such as fuel cell back up power in the wireless industries in both Europe and India.

It recently signed a deal to supply 10,000 back up generator units to India for it's burgeoning wireless industry, as that country's infrastructure makes it fertile ground for Ballards technology as it ramps up. This may be only the start for Ballard in India.

This month (January 2010) Ballard inked a deal with partners Danfoss A/S and Dantherm A/S to buy a controlling interest in Dantherm Power of Denmark which will help it's forray into the fuel cell back up market in Europe tremendously.

Ballard Power has been a sleeping tech play for about 5 years now, but it sleeps no more. With the backing of the Canadian Government for some of it's R and D, coupled with the high profile it's fuel cell buses will get during the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver (as they shuttle both athletes, journalists and spectators to and from Olympic venues), Ballard's stock is definitely upwardly mobile.

Look for this stock to double this year, maybe more.

1/19/2010:
Ballard Power, Dantherm, Danfoss invest to create fuel cell backup power systems capability (BLDP) 2.32 : Co announces that it has acquired a controlling interest in Denmark-based Dantherm Power, partnering with co-investors Danfoss A/S and Dantherm A/S. Dantherm Power develops clean energy backup power systems, utilizing Ballard's hydrogen fuel cell technology, for telecom equipment suppliers. The joint investment and partnering support from Ballard, Danfoss and Dantherm is expected to result in accelerated development of fuel cell backup power applications across Europe

Telecom is big biz in Europe and lots of money are spent on reliability. Fuel cell backup power makes just sense now for this kind of applications and soon it will explode in a big business.

I own shares of this company and several others in the fuel cell industry (hydrogen)

I think that now, 2 years after divesting their automotive fuel cell strategy, this company can finally focus
on providing what customers want now. Back-up power for Telcom's, especially overseas, is a billion $
market and Ballard has the network built ready to sell into that market. Battery powered forklifts and cleaning
machines is also a huge replacement/upgrade market and they have a competitive product ready to go.
The day's of field trials are coming to an end and commericial orders are on the way. After 20 years, its
time to show something. This could be a nice mover higher in 2010.
