Barnes & Noble, Inc. (BKS)

CAPS Rating:
**

The Company's principal business is the sale of trade books, mass market paperbacks, children's books, bargain books, magazines, music and movies direct to customers.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

- Nook! This would become one of the hottest item this Christmas. The device is technically way more advanced than Amazon's Kindle. The major points are: the capability to download samples, lend book to friends, expansion slot, supports open format such as EPUB/eReader and the ability to sample the...More

Books are not the highest priority right now when people are struggling to pay the bills... It's not like they are the cheapest things either. Earnings futures look bleak, especially as the Internet phases out the mass printed word.

Print books are down but not out. The shift to digital books will not happen as quickly as it did with music, for a number of reasons. Readers still have a strong emotional attachment to books. I don't think the same can be said for music's current physical form, the CD.

The shift to ebooks is inevitable eventually, though. And as it takes place, I think BKS is well-positioned to weather and even profit from it. Their eReader, the Nook, is a serious competitor to Amazon's Kindle. It's a solid product, already edging out Amazon's offering in some areas (color touch screen, can lend books to friends, open-source formats and operating system, among others).

All that's even more impressive when you consider the device is only on version 1.0.

Barnes and Noble's large and well-developed e-bookstore also gives them a strong position as print sales slow down. Hundreds of college bookstores provide them with a strong base to expand as that market slowly shifts to e-textbooks.

Their largest competitor, Borders Group, is on the verge of bankruptcy. That could give Barnes and Noble a leg-up in some markets. They might even be able to snap up cheap stores in desirable areas (such as malls with only one bookstore), or other assets if BGP is forced to file Chap 11.

BKS is one of my few long positions, and I feel comfortable with it - even in this crazy market. Especially with the 5% dividend, which will provide decent income even if it gets cut a bit in order to free up cash for e-book/nook R&D.

Their debt is reasonable at $325m; with $74m cash and a $1b market cap. While retail does face a daunting future, it should also allow large chains like Barnes and Noble to re-negotiate rents.

Barnes & Noble is greatly undervalued, but under seige bookseller. The company is under seige, by Amazon.com. However, Barnes & Noble has its own on-line bookstore.

The company also hosts on location author events, somewhat more difficult for Amazon.com to do. I like to visit a Barnes & Noble bookstore, have several double espressos

Stock price is overbeaten. Just because they could not deliver Nook does not mean they fail to sell digital books.
