BHP Billiton Limited (ADR) (BHP)

CAPS Rating:
****

A diversified resources company that operates in several commodity businesses, including aluminum, energy coal and metallurgical coal, manganese, uranium, silver and titanium minerals, and has interests in oil, gas, liquefied natural gas and diamonds.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

I've opened and closed BHP 7 times already in 2009 with positive points. It is a bit hard for me to gauge the valuation, but the facts remains mega bullish over the long haul on this one (I own this one in real life and buy and sell half my position on every dip and rip):

Economy's back, and so BHP is back. Picking it at around its 52 week high, but it is also the same level it was a few years ago as well. Poised to bump up higher with China a short trip away for them.

I've opened and closed BHP 7 times already in 2009 with positive points. It is a bit hard for me to gauge the valuation, but the facts remains mega bullish over the long haul on this one (I own this one in real life and buy and sell half my position on every dip and rip):
1) It exports minerals to China and the emerging world, which whether you like it or not will grow faster than the USA, as the world as a whole grows it needs basic materials,
2) It is priced in Aussie currency, the Aussie currency itself outperformed the S&P500 last year alone. Austrialia is already raising rates signaling that their country is growing at a solid pace, unlike the US,
3) It is diversifyied, so if demand for one commodity slips, it is still good; and
4) It has a yield above 2%, which historically are the best stocks to own over the long term.

'nuff said,
Griffin

What's not to like about this diverse company, Mate? Throw another shrimp on the barbie and sit back while you watch this puppy surge when oil returns to previous highs.
