Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (AMLN)

CAPS Rating:
***

A biopharmaceutical company committed to improving the lives of people with diabetes, obesity and other diseases through the discovery, development and commercialization of innovative medicines.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Based on the statements made by the President of the company during the bio-tech conference conference in San Francisco, the FDA advised the company that they could use the data base on the one million patients already on Byetta, to meet the criteria on cardio vascular disease. Amylin, where to begin.

How about with their flagship product Byetta. Its an injection to treat diabetes that just can't capture enough market to make AMLN profitable. Management is doing a poor job. Things are so bad they recently lost a proxy fight with activist investor Carl Icahn, and he has pl...More

I don’t believe Byetta LAR will be approved in March;
1. The manufacturing process uses a double emulsion (water in oil in water) and suffers from poor yield, highly variable results and inconsistent drug product performance.
2. Because of number 1, I believe efficacy (while statistically significant) will be inferior to the BID dosage form (and competitive products).
3. The FDA scrutinizes the safety of all sustained release injectable drugs to a much higher standard than those of oral drugs.

Amylin, where to begin.

How about with their flagship product Byetta. Its an injection to treat diabetes that just can't capture enough market to make AMLN profitable. Management is doing a poor job. Things are so bad they recently lost a proxy fight with activist investor Carl Icahn, and he has placed members on their board. They also decided to fire their entire sales force, and instead rely completely on their partner ship with ELY to market their drugs.

What they have, have had, and will probably continue to have in the pipeline is a breakthrough drug Exenatide Once Weekly -which is the first once a week diabetes treatment stuck in FDA phase 3 limbo. To those without diabetes, a once a week treatment sounds like a milestone product. There is however, tremendous brand loyalty amongst diabetics to stick to their meds, as they spend considerable time figuring out a dosage and treatment system that works. Combine that with AMLN's poor marketing practices, and I don't see them doing anything other than maintaining the status quo and operating at a loss, even if their drug is approved.

Earnings are coming up Jan 26, time to put a position on.
